Best Uses for Used Moving Boxes
If you are in the process of moving, you will want to make sure you are packing your belongings in sturdy, high-quality moving boxes to protect the things you hold most dear. The dilemma is after the move is complete, what to do with all of those boxes you acquired and now have no need for.
At Tru-Pak Moving Systems, we have over 60 years of offering professional moving services and seen an awful lot of discarded boxes go to waste, that could have otherwise been salvaged.
We know many of you feel that once a box has been used it has outlasted its usefulness why should you keep them around. Since you no longer have a moving need for them what purpose could be served by keeping them on hand? Here are some tips on just what to do with them once the move is complete.
Good to Reuse or Recycle
Purchasing sturdy new moving boxes is always your best bet when trying to protect your items. If you do elect to reuse a box from previous use, make sure the box is in good shape and damage-free. Most cardboard boxes have a limit on what they can endure, especially when being used for moving items from one place to another. Typically, most boxes have a shelf life of no more than 2 uses. Moving boxes normally become unstable, bent, ripped, cut, wet, or ends crushed and can cause more harm to your items than good. Boxes like these can actually be used for many different uses.
If you still have boxes that are in relatively good shape, they can be stored by disassembling them and placed in a pile. These boxes can be used for storage in attics or garages and can hold items like discarded clothes, or excess China, or even Christmas decorations. If you sell items on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or Craigslist, these boxes might be used for transporting or even shipping items for the articles you are selling. These boxes are also good to use for storing mirrors or any sharp objects not being used at the moment.
From a recycling standpoint, we should all want to do our part to protect the environment. Instead of throwing your boxes in the trash, we recommend breaking them down and stacking them in your recycling bin.
Some Are Bound for the Trash
You will always have boxes during a move that have been damaged or destroyed. If you have any boxes that are filthy, bent and broken, have endured a chemical spill, or have just been exposed to the elements, your best option is to throw them in the trash.
If In Doubt– You Could Give Them Away
If your moving boxes are still in excellent condition, give them to someone who can use them. Reach out to family members, friends, or neighbors and see if anyone can use them. If you are hosting a yard sale, put a sign out for (Free Cardboard Boxes). You never know when someone is planning on a move and can use them just as you did without incurring the expense. You can also put ads on Craigslist or a neighborhood community board looking for a new home before you discard them. You can even ask local schools, charities, or churches because someone will always have a need for a sturdy moving box.
Try Selling Them at a Discount
If the boxes you have are virtually brand new, you can try selling them online for a fraction of the original cost and make yourself a few bucks. It can’t hurt to try, as you never know who is in need of moving boxes. You could be saving someone considerable money by selling your quality moving boxes at less than new box prices.
Don’t Forget Crafts and Kids
If you have little children, you already know how they love to play with boxes. They may not last long but the enjoyment kids get out of making a little home for them to play in is pure enjoyment. They can also color the exterior of the boxes, make an arts and crafts item, and design ornaments. Just to let their little imaginations run wild is enough.
