Packing and Moving a Bedroom the Proper Way

As with any room, bedrooms aren’t the most difficult to pack however they can still be overwhelming. Like many of us, our bedrooms can become a cluttered mess, and organizing that mess takes both time and a plan. In order to have your bedrooms packed and ready to go prior to the Moving Company’s arrival date, there are some simple things you can do to make the process easier on yourself.
These simple moving practices are brought to you by one of North Carolinas oldest and most successful moving companies serving Blowing Rock and the surrounding communities, Tru-Pak Moving Systems.
Acquire the Right Supplies
Prior to undertaking any packing project, make sure you have purchased all of the right supplies for the job. If it is a bedroom, you will need an assortment of moving boxes for packing clothes, wardrobe boxes, sheets, and towels in medium to large boxes, and maybe even file boxes for documents. You will also need shipping or packing tape, multi-purpose scissors, multi-colored markers, and labels to organize the contents of your bedroom. One helpful hint is to create an inventory list for each bedroom, documenting each room’s furniture, specific household items, and color-coded boxes according to each room so items don’t get mixed up with other rooms when being delivered. Also, make sure you label boxes that are fragile and contain delicate items so the moving company knows which items should be handled with special care.
Try De-cluttering First
The most difficult part of any packing project and move is getting rid of unwanted items you have accumulated over the years. By going through the de-cluttering process, you should create piles of unwanted items. This is very important as it will reduce what you have to pack and take with you when you move. It will also help you to decide what should be donated or trashed. Make sure during this process that you separate items you absolutely need immediately and pack them in an overnight suitcase. Items like medicines, toiletry items, change of clothes for work, jewelry, etc.
Simply Start Small
Tackling a master bedroom can get overwhelming, so it is better to start off with a smaller one that is less crowded. Try working backward and focusing on content that is in plain sight. May be items on top of your dresser or nightstand, like jewelry, books, then clothing in drawers, etc. While packing these items make sure you organize, tape, label, and store each box according to the room they belong in. Again, carefully pack delicate items and mark them fragile. We also recommend you pack valuable jewelry and items of sentimental value and keep those with you at all times when you move.
Packing-Breakable Items First
As you are packing smaller items, you should also work on those items that are breakable. Choose smaller boxes for packing up knick-knacks, small mirrors, picture frames, lamps, vases, etc. Make sure to wrap these items in plastic bubble wrap, and store them in a secure box with proper labeling the box fragile to prevent those items from being broken.
Clothing and Bedding
When tackling any of your closets, it is important to sort items that are either out of season, or in and pack those items in separate boxes first. Then focus on the items you are wearing now. For any dresses, suits, hanging shirts, and formal attire that can’t be folded, purchase wardrobe boxes. For any items that can go in boxes, make sure you properly fold them and try and store them neatly. If you do not have shoe boxes, and shoe trees, try and pack shoes in boxes where you have some type of padding like bedding, sheets or towels. This will serve to not ruin or crush your shoes.
Disassemble Bedroom Furniture
You may need help with disassembling bedroom furniture, especially if it is large and heavy. However, if you feel you are ready alone for the task, then you will want to disassemble your bed, its frame last. Secure empty dresser drawers by wrapping them shut. Move all items to the side where the movers can easily have access and remove those items first.
Area Rugs, Hardware, and Curtains
If your room has small area rugs, make sure you vacuum them thoroughly, then roll them up for moving. If you are taking curtains and its hardware with you, clean everything prior to removing them and try hanging them in wardrobe boxes so as to limit wrinkles. Don’t forget to take all of the hardware and put screws in zip-lock bags.
