The Right Way to Pack and Move a Bedroom

As with most rooms, bedrooms can be difficult to move because of the sheer size of the furniture and the number of clothes, bed sheets, blankets, and comforters that need to be boxed. For so many of us, our bedrooms can be a completely cluttered mess, and organizing that mess takes both time and effort. In order to have your bedroom disassembled, wrapped, and packed prior to the Moving Company’s arrival date, there are some simple things you need to accomplish to make the process easier for everyone involved.

Have All the Right Supplies

Prior to packing a specific room like a bedroom, you need to make sure you have purchased all the right supplies for the job. This is a bedroom, so you will need a complete assortment of moving boxes like wardrobe boxes, mirror cartons, many medium to large-sized boxes, maybe some file boxes, etc. As with all packing projects you will also need shipping tape, multi-purpose shears, and different colored markers and labels to organize the contents of your bedroom. By creating an inventory list for each bedroom that documents each room’s furniture and specific bedroom items, you will then be able to keep track of the items when they are moved. Color coding boxes according to each room will also assist you so that items don’t get mixed up with other bedroom boxes. Also, make sure you label any boxes that have fragile items in them so the moving company knows which items should be handled with delicate hands and special care.

De-clutter As You Go

The most difficult part of any move is choosing which items to keep and which to discard that you have accumulated over the years. The de-cluttering process starts by creating piles, the keep pile, and the get rid of pile. This is very important to reduce what you have to pack and it could actually help someone in need by donating the items you no longer want. Don’t forget to separate the items you will absolutely need during the move like medicine, toiletry items, clothes for work, etc.

Start Off Small

Tackling all of the bedrooms will get overwhelming so it is better to start off small. Focus on contents that may be on the top of a dresser or nightstand. Then move on to the contents within the draws. Try and stay organized using tape, labels, and then store each box according to their room like kids’ room #2. It is also recommended that you pack precious items like jewelry and anything of value that can be carried and kept with you at all times when you move.

Packing Breakable Items Properly

As you are packing these smaller items, you should work on any items that are breakable. Knick-knacks, mirrors, picture frames, lamps, vases, etc. should be wrapped in plastic bubble wrap. Then properly stored in a secure box with labels marked fragile to prevent them from being broken.

Clothing and Bedding Boxes

When tackling your big jobs like closets, it is important to sort items by season and pack those items in boxes first. Then move on to the items you are wearing now. For any items that should not be folded like dresses, suits, and formal attire, purchase wardrobe boxes. Make sure you fold all of the garments to be boxed so that they will not need to be pressed when opened again. If you don’t keep your shoes in boxes, try and pack both men’s and women’s shoes in boxes where you have some cushion-like sheets or towels so as not to ruin or crush your shoes.

Bedroom Furniture

You will probably need help with your bedroom furniture. Disassemble your bed frame and secure dresser drawers by wrapping them shut. Make sure the movers have easy access and to remove those items.

Area Rugs & Curtains

If your bedroom has an area rug, make sure you vacuum it before rolling it up. If the curtains are going too, try and clean them to remove any dust you don’t want to infect your new home with. Curtains can also hang in wardrobe boxes to limit wrinkling.
