Thinking About Moving in Together, Things to Consider to Have a Happy Home

If you are in the process of taking your relationship to the next level by moving in together, there are a lot of things to consider. This really is a big step in any relationship and not only needs to be discussed but thoroughly thought out by all parties. At Tru-Pak Moving Systems, Boone’s premier moving company since 1960 we have helped many couples move in together as first-time home buyers.

Below are some of our favorite tips to consider when deciding to move in with your significant other.

Moving in together for all the right reasons

We believe one should never make a decision to move in with a significant other simply because of convenience. This is a very weak reason to move in with someone. Saving money on rent or a mortgage each month is likewise a terrible reasonMoving in with someone on a full-time basis is a lot different than casual dating and should really be thought out. As with most situations, a lease is usually involved and if things don’t work out, one of the parties could be solely responsible for the monthly payments. If that’s your idea of saving money and it backfires, it could put one of you in a bind financially. So, remember if you both are deciding to merge lives, talk about the issues that could come up and make a decision around the relationship, rather than convenience. It’s also a good idea to set expectations for each other financially so that there are no surprises.

Handling Joint Finances

Current finances are usually the issue of most troubled marriages in this country, so prior to moving in together have an honest and detailed conversation about your finances. Prior to calling a professional mover, signing a lease, or even starting the packing process, discuss all of the expenses that will be incurred and talk about how they will be covered.

For instance, are you splitting the bills 50/50?  Have you thought about a system to make sure things will be paid for on time? How will you divide the cost of groceries or other staples? Whose name will be on the Utility bills? Think through these questions, decide on whose taking responsibility and create a budget together. This will help set the proper expectation for each person.

Setting Reasonable Expectations

As with any successful relationship, communication is key to happiness. Since you will be sharing a space together, you will need to discuss each other’s responsibilities on a day, to day basis. We suggest working out a schedule for cleaning, laundry, groceries, trash removal, etc. Having a conversation about responsibilities and who would like to run your household may seem petty, but necessary. You will be sharing responsibilities and common space for the first time, so what you may deem acceptable your significant other may not.

Decorating Your New Dwelling

This can be one of the most challenging aspects of moving in together. Men and women usually differ in their approach to decorating a home. Men like to go for the minimalistic approach, with very little furniture, limited pictures on the wall, a floor lamp, and a big-screen tv. Women on the other hand like to accessorize with curtains, bedspreads, color schemes that actually match, many pictures, and oftentimes candles and accents. Try compromising to get through the process of decorating your new home. It is important to agree on a common aesthetic to guide you through your decorating choices for your new home.

Put Both Names on the Lease or Mortgage

Since you are moving in together it is only fair that both of your names should be on the lease or even the mortgage. This helps each party feel they have an equal say and investment in your new home.
