What Are We Going to Do with Old Moving Boxes?

When you are planning a move to a new home, you will want to make sure you are using only high-quality moving boxes to protect your possessions. The dilemma becomes, what do we do with all of those boxes once we have completed the move.

At Tru-Pak Moving Systems, we recommend and carry only the most durable cardboard boxes because we understand these types of boxes have value after they have been used. Most moved-in families don’t understand that just because the move is over that the boxes, they invested in, have no more value, not true.

Below are some suggestions on what to do with a portion of the boxes you have leftover from the move and how to properly discard with the rest you no longer have a need for.

Storage Use

If you originally purchased only durable, high-quality cardboard boxes, then after the move is completed, some, not all will be in the same shape they were in when you first pack them. Purchasing these types of new moving boxes is always your best bet to protect your valuables. But if you elect to reuse a moving box, we suggest you reuse it once, then either get rid of it or use it in a different manner. Typically, most of these types of boxes only have a shelf life of one or maybe two more uses. Some moving boxes become unstable (bent, ripped, cut, get wet, or crushed) due to the weight of items that were carried in them.

Saving a specific number of boxes for additional storage is one option you could exercise and you might even leave items that are not readily needed packed up for a later time. Boxes like these can be used for many different types of uses. These boxes can be used for storage in the attic, for clothes, towels, china, excess kitchen utensils, Christmas decorations, etc. These boxes can also be good to use for moving mirrors or other large objects.

Most of us want to do our part to protect the environment and rather than throw your boxes away they can be broken down and recycled.

When a move is completed, you will always have boxes that have been damaged or destroyed. Boxes that become wet, bend, crushed, filthy, bent, or broken need to be recycled or actually thrown in the trash.

Give Them Away

If you have moving boxes still in good condition, consider giving them to someone who can use them. Try reaching out to family, friends, or neighbors to see if anyone has a use for them. If you are having a yard sale, put a sign out for “Free Moving Boxes”. You can also put ads on Craigslist, Facebook marketplace or in a neighborhood community online board. Maybe you could ask local schools, charities, or churches. Someone will always have a need for high-quality moving boxes.

Selling Them Could Be an Option

If the moving boxes you have are virtually brand new, you could try and sell them online and pick up a few dollars. It wouldn’t hurt to try, as you never know who is in need of used, but stable moving boxes. You could be saving someone in need a few bucks by selling your quality moving boxes at a fraction of the cost they would incur for new boxes.

How About for Your Kids

Anyone with little children knows they love to play in boxes. They can make a little home to play in. They can also color the exterior of the boxes with crayons, make crafts, and ornaments, or simply use them for stuffing toys or other items in. Let your little one’s imaginations run wild.
