What to Do with Old Moving Boxes

If you are planning a move to a new home, you will want to purchase the highest quality moving boxes you can find, to protect your belongings. The dilemma when you have moved is what to do with all of those boxes many of which can be saved and used again. I know many of you feel you should keep some of them for storage and useful needs. But as you no longer have a need for most of them, below we have listed several scenarios to help you figure out what to do with all those moving boxes.

Salvage First

Purchasing new, high quality moving boxes is always your best bet to protect your items when you are moving. If you elect to reuse a used box, our suggestion is to reuse it only once. Then you can either get rid of it or use it again in a different way. Typically, most moving boxes do not have a reusable shelf life of more than 2 uses. Moving boxes normally become unstable after a move and get bent, cut, ripped, wet, or even somewhat crushed. If reused they can cause additional harm to any items stored. But boxes even in this shape can actually be used for a few different uses. If you have leftover moving boxes that are still in relatively good shape, by disassembling them they can be stored or recycled. Some of these boxes can be used for storage in say the attic for clothes, odds and ends, Christmas decorations, etc. If you frequently sell items on an internet site like Craigslist or Ebay you can use them for shipping items you have sold.

Recycle

Recycling is a great way for us to do our part to protect the environment. Rather than throw your discarded or worn boxes in the trash, break them down and stack them in your recycling bin. Recycled cardboard is an excellent item for producing biofuel so consider this method of recycling.

Trash

You will always have worn boxes during a move that need to be discarded. If your moving boxes are filthy, bent, ripped, torn, broken, have chemical spills or have been exposed to the elements, then you best option is to throw them in the trash.

If in Doubt – Give Them Away

If your moving boxes are still in excellent condition after being only used once, either return them to a moving supply store like U-Haul or give them to someone who can use them. Try reaching out to family, friends or even new neighbors who might have a need for them. If you are hosting an estate or yard sale, put a sign out for “free boxes”. You can also put an ad on Craigslist or in a neighborhood community board, ask a local school, charity or church if someone has a need for slightly used moving boxes.

Sell Them

If boxes you have left over are virtually brand new, you can try and sell them online and maybe recoup a few bucks. It certainly can’t hurt to try, as you never know who might be in need of moving boxes. You just might be saving someone a few bucks by selling your moving boxes at say a fraction of the cost of new ones.

Crafts and Maybe Even Kids have a Need

If you have little children you know they love to stay occupied and play with boxes. You can make a little house for them to play in, design hideouts and even play hide and seek. Kids can color or draw on the exterior of the boxes. With their parents help they can even make crafts or other things out of empty moving boxes. Maybe they will want to build a fort or a lemonade stand, who knows. Let their big imaginations just run wild.
